To expand upon the answer posted by Allan Eckert if you have been using Time Machine to do backups of your Mac before you installed the update it is possible to boot from the Recovery Partition and restore from your Time Machine backup.

As K Shaffer suggests, maybe you do not have the little bit of extra Snow Leopard update that allows it to download and install El Capitan. Rather than as normal just restoring an individual file or folder via Time Machine you would restore the entire Mac to a point in time via Time Machine - this is often referred to as a disaster recovery restore. Time Machine should list what version of OS X was backed up so if say 10.11.3 broke your Mac, you should be able to restore to the backup of 10.11.2 or earlier.
